Punching Units for Square Tube
Square tube
is more likely to be punched with a mandrel than without and this is because the flat face of the tube is depressed by the punching action - and this in turn will tend to bulge the sides to compensate. Square tube is more likely to be used in a structural way so it is more often punched with a mandrel.
Square tubes are less likely to be used for components that require forming due to the problem of material being too rigid and distortion to the tube at the bend points. Aluminium square tube is more
forgiving in this respect and the distorted bend is sometimes a feature.
