Punching Tools for square tubes using a mandrel inside the tube

above: This illustration shows an air-hydraulic powered punching machine to punch 20mm square tube of 1,5mm wall thickness. The machine uses an ‘Airdromatic’ A66 intensifier designed and manufactured by Parsell Minni-Die Ltd - to suit arduous punching cycle demands. The tube material is slid onto a mandrel containing the die buttons to prevent the tube from deforming during the punching.

The machine shown at the top of this page is punching square tube with a mandrel employed. The die buttons are let into the mandrel and the scraps from punching one wall collect inside the mandrel pockets.

As the punched component is pulled off the mandrel the scraps pass through the mandrel, through the base of the unit and through the bed to be collected below.

above: Two units forming part of a complete work station to punch holes in the ends of tubular components - all to prevent deformation and a burr free hole. The units are machined to form a ‘stump mandrel’ that contains a standard die button.

Punching Units for Square Tube

Square tube is more likely to be punched with a mandrel than without and this is because the flat face of the tube is depressed by the punching action - and this in turn will tend to bulge the sides to compensate. Square tube is more likely to be used in a structural way so it is more often punched with a mandrel.

Square tubes are less likely to be used for components that require forming due to the problem of material being too rigid and distortion to the tube at the bend points. Aluminium square tube is more forgiving in this respect and the distorted bend is sometimes a feature.

Punching Tool for square tube

The other two illustrations on this page are typical of the ‘end preparation’ of square tubes for later assembly or fitting to other parts.

The components shown here are parts for a racking system manufacturer and and an office furniture manufacturer.

It can be seen from both photographs that a burr free hole is achieved leaving a flat surface finish. This can be very important if the finished tube is powder coated or chrome plated - when blemishes would be high lighted.
